Interest Groups
We have a wide range of interest groups related to Community Involvement, Sports and Fitness, Hands-on Activities, Out and About, Books and Discussion, and Bridge, all described below. Please check the Calendar for details of meetings. Most groups welcome new members, but always check first.
Community Involvement
AAUW Connectons produces AAUW’s own public access TV show at KMVT, Channel 15, Mountain View’s Access studio. These Comcast programs are shown regularly in Los Altos, Mountain View, and Cupertino. Come and watch. We’re eager to have new members for technical work (camera, audio, lights, computer), directing, and producing. Shows often deal with AAUW issues about girls and women, women in business and the arts, or general community issues. Taping: LAST Thursday, 6:00-8:00 PM.
Discussion Group meets in members’ home for stimulating programs and discussions followed by dessert. Meets: 3rd Friday, 8:00 PM.
Tech Time Science Club for Girls, a community action project of the branch, is offered in collaboration with Girl Scouts of Santa Clara County. This hands-on science enrichment program for girls grades 4-6 meets one 5:00-6:30 PM Monday a month (October-May) at the Palo Alto Girl Scout House. The programs provide girls with positive science experiences and offers exposure to professional women scientists as role models. AAUW volunteers are needed to help with each meeting. New volunteers are welcome!
Outings
Cultural Capers goes out to see new places, enjoy special events, and eat lunch.
Dining Out visits different restaurants each month. This is a group for women who enjoy having dinner with others. New members are welcome. Meets: 1st Tuesday, 6:15 PM.
Nostalgia Group meets where members decide. Often we go to museums, art shows, historic sites, and outdoor, easy-walk places. We can go as far as San Francisco or San Jose for a good time with long time members of Los Altos/Mtn View AAUW – friends, both “old and new.”
Restaurant Touring tries out American and ethnic restaurants in the immediate area. Meets: 3rd Tuesday, lunchtime.
Creativity
Crafts Group makes a variety of crafts from different cultures. Meets: 1st Thursday, 9:30 AM.
Microwave Cooking learns to use microwave ovens to the fullest. Hands-on cooking includes speicalties from appetizers and salads to main dishes and desserta. Timesaving but appetizing recipes are emphasized. New members are welcome! Meets: 2nd Tuesday, 10:30 AM.
Literary
Bibliophiles I and II read popular and classic books. A member of the group leads the discussion, and the hostess offers light refreshments. Both groups welcome new members. Bibliophiles I meets: 1st Thursday, 1:30 PM. Bibliophiles II meets: 4th Thursday, 1:00 PM.
Mystery Readers reads and discusses a mystery each month. One member leads the discussion, and the hostess offers light refreshments, sometimes in keeping with the book’s setting. New members are welcome. Meets: 2nd Thursday, 7:00 PM.
New Leaf Book Club meets at members’ homes, and each person reviews a book of her choice. Group discussion and dessert follow. This is a very congenial group. Topics vary with members’ interests. Meets: 3rd Friday, 1 PM.
Play Readers read and discuss selected plays sent from the California Drama Exchange. Light refreshments. New members welcome. Meets: 3rd Wednesday, 1:00 PM.
Poetry Readers read poetry from a selected poet each month. No past experience in reading poetry is needed, just an interest. New members are welcome. Meets: 2nd Tuesday, 2:00 PM.
Fitness
Golf plays every week at Deep Cliff Golf Course. All levels are welcome to join us. Dust off your clubs and enjoy the exercise and play. Meets: Monday, 9:30 AM.
Par Course meets every week to do a par course exercise trail or create its own combination of exercise and yoga. Everyone is welcome to join the fun and fitness. Meets: Saturday mornings.
Tennis offers exercise and fun, doubles and singles play. Meets: Wednesday, 5:30-6:30 PM.
Bridge
Beginners’ Couples & Singles Party Bridge meets in members homes. Meets: 4th Tuesday, 7:30-10:30 PM.
Couples Party Bridge meet in members’ homes for enjoyable bridge. A combined potluck dinner with bridge is held each year. Meets: 2nd Saturday, 7:30 PM.
Daytime Duplicate Bridge I and II both have waiting lists. Group I meets: 3rd Monday, 12:30 PM. Group II meets: 2nd Friday, 12:30 PM.
Evening Duplicate Bridge members and their partners play some challenging hands once a month. Substitutes are always needed – with enough interest, another section might be formed! Meets: 1st Saturday, 7:30 PM.
Friday Morning Bridge is friendly party bridge until noon at members homes with refreshments served early. Meets: 2nd Friday, 9:30 AM-noon.
Morning Bridge plays until noon, ending with a light lunch and a social time. Occasionally there are openings which are filled from the substitute list. Meets: 1st Wednesday, 9:30 AM.
Thursday Evening Bridge plays party bridge. Currently the only openings are for substitutes. Meets: 3rd Thursday, 7:30 PM.
Tournament Bridge involves pairs of couples playing 16 hands during each month. Game times are arranged by the partners playing that month. Prizes are awarded at the May luncheon. Waiting list only.
